Learn English

The English language is spoken in the United States of America and in Great Britain as the native language. English is also the 'world language', just like French is considered the language of the diplomats.

Many large international corporations have declard English as their official language and when you travel you are likely to find in any corner of the world somebody who speaks at least a few words English.

These are powerful reasons to learn English!

Knowing languages helps in many situations.... :-) - English will serve you for more than just a simple Thank You sign, especially if you know English well, the world is open and you can communicate just about anwhere on the planet!

How did you learn English?

Learn English the conventional way

If you have the time and are lucky enough to have a good school in your area, then learning the English language and English grammar in the classroom might still be a very attractive solution. There are some distinct advatages:

  1. You have a fixed schedule for learning

  2. You are together with others who also want tolearn Egnlish
  3. You are in direct contact with an English teacher
  4. Usually the fees in a class are reasonable.

For some people the classroom approach is stillwhat works best. You may alos want to grab a few books to have at home for your home work or to take along to school to look up the vocabulary and the English grammar. A Thesaurus is very handy to expand your vocabulary, and books about the English grammar are certainly a necessity!

Learn English with Audio Files

There are situations in life when the classroom approach simply does not work:

  1. You are on the move and have irregular working hours, you'd be missing more classes than would be good for your understanding and progress.
  2. There is no school within reach that fits your needs
  3. You want to be able to organize your learning at the times in the day when you are at your mental best, and the classes take place during the wrong hours of the day.

I'm sure there are more reasons than these, but the three points is what I hear most often. So if not in the conventionla class room, where and how can you learn English fast?

Use audio files to listen and learn!

Pimsleur, a French teacher and lingusitic professor has developed a great learning system that is based entirely on the way we naturally learn language, also our first language when we're babies. This approach is quite simple: You listen to tapes, or nowadays MP3 audio files and by doing so repeatedly, you learn the language the natural way.

If you're curious, how this sounds, go to this page and play the sample recording:

Learn English with a Private Tutor

To be able to hire a private tutor is the luxury version for people with enough money. This is great, especially if the tutor is skilled and the student is willing to work. Learning English with private lessons like this you'll be making extremely rapid progress.

The advantages are many:

  1. The tutor has time only for you, the lessons will be taylored very specifically to your needs.
  2. The speed with which the classes advance are determined only by your progress.
  3. You can chose what time of the day and how long you would like to be taught every day, very convenient!

So if you are in the lucky positon to be able to afford an personal tutor, then don't hesitate a second and hire one!

Learn English in an English speaking country

To be immersed in a language, i.e. to live in a place where you hear and read the language at all times does help a lot to learn quickly. It's a bit like the Pimsleur method, but instead of listening to the Pimsleur audios a few hours a day, you have 24 hours full immersion!

Unfortunately, many people make the mistake to go to towns that are very popular with foreign students and where there are many (good!) language schools, like Brighton in the UK or San Diego, California in the U.S.A.

Now what happens when there are many foreign students together????

They start to use their own native language among themselves, and the advantage of being in an English speaking environment vanishes... poooffff..... - These places are really not much better than the English school back home.

So you're better off going to a place where there are few other foreign students, or at least try to spend ALL of your free time only with people whose native language is English. It's tough, especially at the begining, when you hardly speak any English. but if you have a bit of staying power, you'll realize that you all of a sudden understand them quite well. Making a few, sometimes really funny, mistakes when you try to express yourself does not do any harm at all, it actually often breaks the ice and makes for great new contacts and sometimes even friendships with the 'natives'.

It can be quite expensive to travel to a country where English is spoken, but if you have a chance to participate in an student exchange program, or if there are other possibilities to spend some time in an English speaking country, go for it! You'll speak much better English when you return.
